Visiting from another chapter and want to say hi? Moving and want to change/add your BHS affiliation to the Anchormen? We’d love to see you! Please Contact Us.
Do I need to be able to read music to sing with you?
- No, any level of musical experience is welcome (including none!)
- We also send out “learning tracks” for many of our songs, meaning you can learn your part by listening to it at home
What is the time commitment?
- Rehearsals are on Mondays, 7:30-9:30PM at the St. John’s Arts & Culture Centre (we break for Christmas and Summer each year)
- We encourage members to come sing as often as they can, and weekly rehearsal attendance is not mandatory
- We strive to perform in the community at least once per month, especially around Christmas
Do I have to audition?
- While we have no formal audition process, our director may ask what musical experience you have and check your vocal range in order to figure out what part(s) you can sing
What is the cost?
- If you decide to join our organization, there are yearly dues payable online to the Barbershop Harmony Society. The chorus does not have any further membership fees.
- See the Barbershop Harmony Society membership page for membership options and pricing
- We offer bursaries for students at the MUN School of Music, see our Bursaries page for more information
Wait, did you say BURSARIES???
- You bet! See our Bursaries page for more information (MUN Music students only)
How old do I have to be to sing with you?
- We invite singers aged 12+ to come and sing with us
What do you do in the community?
- The aim of our chorus is to help preserve and encourage the art of barbershop singing.
- We often perform throughout the St. John’s metro area. Regular and past performance spaces include:
- Downtown St. John’s;
- Retirement homes;
- Annual Spring concerts;
- St. John’s International Airport;
- MUN Music graduation recitals;
- and many more venues/events!
- We visit with local school choirs and share the art of barbershop singing
- We offer bursaries to post-secondary students who choose to lend their talents to our chorus
I identify as female, non-binary, or otherwise gender-nonconforming. Can I still sing barbershop?
- Yes! Barbershop singing is for everyone.
- If you are female, non-binary, or otherwise gender non-conforming, you may find the below information helpful in deciding which local barbershop group(s) to check out:
- Currently there are two barbershop choruses in the St. John’s area: the Anchormen and Newfound Sound.
- The Anchormen’s singers mostly identify as male, and all have changed voices (AKA: lower voices, or traditionally “male” voices).
- Newfound Sound‘s singers mostly identify as female, and the group sings in a range typically considered “upper voices” (traditionally “female” voices).
- If you want to sing barbershop in St. John’s, nobody will say no. If you’d like to chat about your options, our Webmaster is trans/non-binary and would be happy to chat. Just email them at info@anchormen.ca, or message on Facebook.
I’m coming to St. John’s from another chorus. Can I continue my current BHS Membership with the Anchormen?
- Yes! Please Contact Us and we can help you figure out your transfer or dual-membership through the BHS online membership portal.
I’m a fellow barbershopper visiting St. John’s, can I come say hi?
- Absolutely! Please stop by during a rehearsal! Make sure to Contact Us before dropping in, as we might be out singing in the community or be taking a night off.
